The Best Time to Visit Mauritius

06 Oct 2009 by Juliet du Preez

The weather in Mauritius is warm and inviting all year round. One only need consider summer and winter; although there is not all that much difference temperature-wise. The visitor can enjoy a wonderful island break anytime.

The summer months run from December to April when coastal temperatures range from 25°C to 33°C. Winter months are from May to November and temperatures of 18°C to 24°C are typical. On the plateau you can expect temperatures to be about 5°C less. July is the coolest month and February the hottest.

Summer in Mauritius is extremely humid, so the winter months are often preferred. Also, summer is the rainy season with profuse rainfall occurring from January to March. There is the possibility of cyclones in January and February; although, it is rare for these to actually hit Mauritius. However, cyclones far out at sea can bring days of rain.

July to September are the best months to visit if you want to enjoy warm - but not sweltering -temperatures and avoid spending rainy days indoors. (Unless, it is indoor romance that you are after.)

July and August are the months where the winds are strongest and are the best months for surfers to visit. In summer it is these winds that are welcomed in the sweltering heat.

Those wanting to fish are advised to visit from October to April as this is when the large predators feed close to shore.

For scuba diving, choose a time from December to March as this is when the water tends to be its clearest (so long as there aren't any cyclones).

Mauritius doesn't really have high and low tourist seasons; it is an island that is fantastic all year round. However, one needs to be aware of certain other factors such as:
  • The Christmas and New Year period where tourists flock to Mauritius for an island break
  • The French school holidays (in August) - Mauritius is a popular destination for the French
  • International University holidays (as many Mauritians study overseas)
